So the 2010 GNCC series is officially in full swing. Now that everyone has survived the first two round, it’s finally time to sit back and have more than a few days between races. With the season underway, just 2 rounds in and things are already pretty interesting.
Throughout the weeks leading up to Round 1, it looked as if Charlie Mullins was going to be the guy to beat. With several wins at SETRA races and a win at the National Enduro opener, he showed that just because he has no real factory support this year, doesn’t mean he can’t win.
However, when the dust (or well, mud really) in Florida settled, it was Josh Strang taking the top spot on the podium with Chris Bach taking second and Mullins in third. Opening round of the premiere off-road series in USA and it ends with two privateer riders on the podium. This is when everyone should have known that this season is going to be epic.
Fast forward a few days to Round 2 in Georgia and it looked as if it was going to be Thad Duvall’s day to shine, but he had a pretty hard crash that took him out of the race.. What happened then? The race ended with Strang taking the win yet again, while Paul Whibley redeems himself from a tough ride in Florida and finishes second, with Chris Bach rounding out the podium in third. Mullins put in a heck of a ride for a fourth place after going down in the first turn and heading into the woods next to last.
Moving on to the XC2 class, Jason Thomas has proved to be the man to beat in the first two rounds, and of course defending class champ Kailub Russell wants another title, but how about Jesse Robinson? Jesse is pretty much doing everything himself with some help from his dad, and he’s been on the podium both races. Jesse has had a couple of tough seasons and almost called it quits at one point, but he’s currently showing that he still has it. This may end up being the class to watch, because the top 3 guys are showing that they can duke it out, and who knows how this thing will end.
The season is just getting started, but with only the first wave of races in the books, this season is already looking like it is going to be one of the greatest in the history of GNCC racing. It’s pretty tough to guess how this season will end, but no matter what happens you know this will be the season to remember.
Next up for the GNCC series will be Steele Creek. Last year Josh Strang took the win with Charlie Mullins in second and Paul Whibley in third. Will Strang come in this year and make it three in a row? Will Mullins take it his first win of the year? It’s hard to tell. Steele Creek is usually a tough one to call. It’s hard to guess who will tame the hills of North Carolina, but we’ll know in less than two weeks when the series makes it return.
Steele Creek is hard to figure out in more than one way. Sometimes it’s been freezing cold and snowing, others times it’s been close to 80 degrees, it’s been muddy, and it’s been dusty. It’s shaping up to be a good race this year and you know it’s going to be exciting. So until then, keep it real and always stay tuned to Offroad Junkies for your Offroad fix.
